Galaxy Nexus Review - Say Hello to Android’s Future

Galaxy Nexus Review Reviewing one of 2011′s most anticipated phones is no easy task. We’ve had our hands on the GSM flavor for over a month now (the Verizon version for about a week), and even that amount of time has left us feeling conflicted. Mostly the Galaxy Nexus impressed as being the best smartphone on the market. Other times, not so much. Having reviewed countless phones over the past twelve months, the Galaxy Nexus is definitely a welcome change of pace over the droves of devices that came out in 2011, thanks in large part to Ice Cream Sandwich. To break it down, we’re making it crystal clear about what we loved, and what we hated, starting first with the positives. On the hardware front, the Galaxy Nexus’ screen is stunning, plain and simple. With a 720p Super-AMOLED (1280×720) display, the text, images and video all look crisp, clear and incredibly vibrant. Of course, a nice display would be meaningless without a good OS, and Ice Cream Sandwich certainly doesn’t disappoint. @FlaviusCleon yes but do we know if SGSIII will come for Verizon because the previous “4G” incarnations of the Galaxy Series have been for most of the major carriers except for Verizon the only one that I’ve seen for Verizon was the “Captivate” which was 3G I will say it would be nice if it does come to Verizon I like to mess around with phones and I bought the Nexus because the previous “4G” phone was a total piece of crap.

    @mystuff3040 just because it wasn’t a problem for you doesn’t mean it won’t be a problem for other people.

    I don’t get it Jon..
    The power button’s placement is not an issue at all.
    I even tried to replicate the problem, but it didn’t change the volume at all.

    @jkirk1626 *sigh*
    The phone waits to rotate on purpose, Google added the code so it wouldn’t rotate crazily like the HTC Desire did for example.

    @pnetwork12 Yeah. Until way after Android could be activated and synced over the air, iOS needed a wired connection to iTunes. Yet another requirement that fanboys defended to the death then declared Apple’s reversal to be proof that Apple had been right all along.

    @salx101 We’re impressed by your ability to see the big picture. Without you, all of us would descend into bloody battle, ridding off on the women, raping the horses, and pruning the hedges. Everything’s equally awesome. Thank you for providing clarity. I didn’t agree at first, but once I realized you’d used profanity, I saw that you could not be wrong. F bomb = QED. Argumentum ad [naughty word].

    @JavinAryan11 iOS’s interface and responsiveness are still the best. iOS performs better with less processing power than Android. A 3GS is quicker than my Galaxy Nexus, which still takes >2 seconds to switchback and forth between portrait & landscape despite dual 1.2 GHz and 1GB of RAM. Android is better for people who can think for themselves and recognize that no one knows your interests better than you. Apple-knows-best appeals to liberal drones who fear freedom and love being commanded.

    Great review thanks. I agree with Ur complaints with the power button placement ,and headset jack placement for us techie/athletes in the gym lol. I like the jack up top. I look forward to future phones with ics such as HTC. Samsung plastic phones just don’t do it for me. Keep doin what you do :-)

    @iSamzi It does not make much difference. The virtual buttons still take up screen space, although they will disappear for some apps. It’s more gimmick than substance. They will change orientation as you rotate the phone. They give the phone a cleaner look, save weight and reduce the number of mechanical mechanisms that can break.

    Jon, a suggestion! Your reviews are incredible, you are very detailed, and take a lot of time to not only try, but review the video. Your videos are kind of long though. Maybe you could put in a “table of contents,” so I can skip to the part about the browser, or to hardware, etc at will.

    Great job though, thanks a lot for the review!

    @robertt194 Not folders that let you rearrange contents by dragging and dropping from within the folder. Before ICS, a folder’s contents were determined by the order you dropped them into the folder. When you dropped an icon into a folder, the icon would only go in the last position. If you selected an icon from within a folder, your only option was to remove the icon from that folder. With 4.x, you can rearrange a folder’s icons without having to remove those icons.

    @carlosmashiado2 Well I wouldn’t call myself apple fanboy if I’m happily married with android now. I just talked about my previous experience that people really can’t know if they haven’t owned an iPhone for example. Other things I agree you with. Yes buying Apple doesn’t make sense in paper specs but their products are different and If you want the OS, the design and the logo you must pay a little bit more.
